Some of Berlin's most famous landmarks are relics from the Communist era, whilst many have even been transformed into the best-loved hang-out spots for activists of the increasingly prominent socialist movement in Germany.
During this tour of two halves, we'll explore the Left side of East Berlin!
Firstly, we'll visit the Communist monuments, parks and avenues that are still (perhaps surprisingly) conspicuous in Berlin, including the Marx-Engels Forum, where the two "fathers of socialism" loom larger than life and the so-called "wedding-cake" style eight-storey buildings of Karl-Marx Allee.
In the second half, we'll discover the new stomping ground of the contemporary Left, visiting the site of a former "death strip", where young activists often now clash with police and Rosa Luxemburg Platz, where the offices of the socialist party die Linke now stand.
Expect funny photo opportunities, a new insight into contemporary Berlin and possibly intiation into the German concept of Spätkauf*, because of course we will need refreshment!
