To the East

An Eastwards bike tour to discover the old East Berlin.

This bike tour leads you through the districts of Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg and Lichtenberg. It will give you an overview of the past of the former East Berlin and of the transformation of that these neighbourhoods has seen since reunification.

The tour will include:

Karl-Marx-Allee

Klar-Marx-Allee, formerly known as Stalin-Allee, was built in the district of Mitte and Friedrichshain by the German Democratic Republic between 1952 and 1960. This boulevard is an architectural icon of socialist East Berlin. Frankfurter Tor and Strausbergerplatz Towers are at either end of the avenue and they were symbols of many workers protests and parades during the Soviet period.

Lichtenberg

Lichtenberg is the former headquarter of the Stasi, the East German intelligence service. The former Stasi prison is now a memorial site and you can still visit it. It was mainly a working-class neighbourhood during the period 1961-1990 and the East German architecture and housing estates are still predominant.

Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg became a subdistrict of Pankow in 2011, it is located in Northeastern Berlin. During the German Democratic Republic, which was from1949 to 1990 and it was mainly populated by intellectuals, artists and students. After the fall of the Wall the area saw rapid development and Prenzlauer Berg has become steadily wealthier.
